Review of Streamyx

There are various of problem with Streamyx in connection, according to the information from Malaysia forum such as lowyat.net, cari, redesignmalaysia.com, many user are not satisfied with streamyx service, and the service in rural area is even worse, as some complaints that it is difficult for them connect to the internet, some claims that they got slow connection or frequent disconnection.   Some wrathful streamyx subscriber even created different creative poster to pledge their dissatisfaction.

Streamyx Sucks

There is a testimonial found from internet,a guys who named Ranjit share his experience on a website:

 What a horrible Broadband Service?

Hi All,

I recently upgraded from streamyx 1Mbps to 4Mbps service. I was hoping for a BIG change, but unfortunately, all I can say is that the Service and Support from streamyx Premier Division stinks. It is really really BAD.

Right now, my connection seems to be somewhat stable, but my speed is intermittent and Looooouuuuuusssssyh! I am only getting ~ 300 kbps and nothing more!

I have decided not to pay the bill until Steamyx gets their act together. I suggest that a load of us to do the same and put the pressure back on streamyx. If we do not do this we are going to be spending a lot of time chatting and talking and not getting our money's worth.

From a disgruntled customer...

Cheers,
Ranjit

And the net friends sarcastic story:

You might be either surprised, or not surprised at all, but Earl’s connection speed is back to terrible again.
The Lowyat.net boys have their say on earlier visit here: TMNet CEO Visits Streamyx Customer, Earl-Ku’s House
Rigged? TC_Boy has this to say: “There was an article posted here (on Lowyat.net) before about how ISPs usually mark certain ips to be given max bandwidth & high priority because it belongs to broadband speed test sites. They have fooled the user and the press. The speed maybe for real too but only for him or his DSLAM.”
Hmm…

So, is there any streamyx user here? Please share your experience with us!Regardless its positive or negative!

Broadband service in Malaysia

According to Malaya Communications and Multimedia Commission, Malaysia broadband defined as
i)Providing internet service beyond existing PSTN/ISDN or 2G cellular networks.
ii)Data transmission rate more than dial-up speed(56 kbps in PSTN or 64 kbps in ISDN

There are two main categories of broadband service available in Malaysia provided by different company,
there are wired broadband and wireless broadband.

In Wired broadband it can be divided into different categories again since different ISP implement different technology ,the common technology using in Malaysia broadband service is  DSL and Fibre Optic,

For DSL,the main ISP are the following
  • TM
  • Jaring
  • Maxis
  • Time.
DSL known as Digital Subsriber Line, it use the existing cooper wire in a telephone network to transfer the digital data. In a telephone line, the voice communication only occupy certain frequency , and rest of the frequency were actually useless, therefore DSL technology is introduce and uses a second, higher frequency band for data communication purposes.

While ISP that provide Fibre Optics broadband service are
  • City broadband(only in Cyberjaya)
  • Metrofon
  • Penangfon.
Fiber optic is a cable made by class or plastic fiber cable that carries light which allow transmission over a longer distance and at higher bit rates.  In Malaysia most of the ISP which provided Fiber optic connection choose FTTH (Fiber-To-The-Home) or FTTB (Fiber-To-The-Building) as their network architecture.

For the wireless broadband, the major telecommunication in the country such as
  •  Maxis
  • Digi
  • Celcom
  • U Mobile
They launch mobile broadband through various types of device, such as cell phone, portable modem, and other device. Different standards are used to ,such as WCDMA,HSDPA,EDGE,GPRS and etc. These mobile broadband companies, they can easily provided wireless broadband service by only doing some enhancement or upgrading work on their existing mobile network. 、

However there are several arguments about  "Mobile broadband ", because the QOS(Quality of Service) itself doesn't meet the international broadband definition. Therefore, some said its just a wireless high speed internet access , but some still claims that it is a broadband.

Meanwhile, in order to boost the broadband penetration rate in Malaysia. MCMC has release 4 WiMAX license to those companies.
  • Packet One Networks (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd
  •  YTL e-Solutions Bhd
  • Asiaspace Dotcom Sdn Bhd
  • REDtone International Bhd
WiMAX, stand for Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access, an alternative way provides wireless transmission of data by using ussing different modes. This technology able to provides up to 10Mbps internet connection, it also known as IEEE 802.16 standard. It also an alternative for last mile connection.
Today Packet One Network in Malaysia has formed one of the world’s largest mobile WiMAX 2.3Ghz network.

This is a small clip, briefly explain about WiMAX.

Beside these technology, the iZZinet Sdn Bhd introduce and provide a new alternative mobile wireless broadband service to Malaysia public, the "iBurst" technology.
iBurst also known as HC-SDMA(High Capacity Spatial Division Multiple Access), it is a wireless broadband technology, it operates on a similar premises as GSM or CDMA2000 for mobile phone.

This is a small clip, briefly explain about iBurst technology
There are also some companies introduce VSAT (Very Small Aperture Terminal)broadband service through satellite, those companies are:
  • H-Vision IPSTAR Satellite Broadband
  • Maxis VSAT
  • TM Mobile Satellite Services
VSAT is a ground satellite station with a dish antenna smaller than 3 meters, it can be use to transmit data, voice and video signals. Although VSAT can easily provide broadband access without pulling any cable to your home, but the equipment itself is costly, same as the access fees. This technology mostly used in cooperation building, petrol station and also rural area which don't have any telephone network.

What is broadband??

You may wondering what is broadband, broadband is a high speed internet access, unlike the traditional dial-up internet connection, which require a dial-up modems while the bit rate is limited and not more than 56 kbit/s (kilobits per second) which also require a full use of telephone line. However, with a broadband technology, the bit rate is double than dial up connection and avoid the full use of a telephone line.
In 2006, the OECD define broadband as having download speed equal or more than 256 kbps. But in 2009, the United States Federal Communications Commission defines broadband should have a data transmission rate more than 768 kbps, in at least one direction.

There are many broadband technology being used in today's world, there are are DSL,Cable modems, wireless broadband, fiber optics, satellite internet and etc.
